History of the house

8, rue de la Gloire was owned by the Gaillard family for many generations. It is believed to date from the sixteenth century and was not, like the houses opposite, occupied by winemakers as the house does not have a ‘cave’. The long windows suggest the house was occupied by someone from a different trade, who wanted more light inside the house. The Huguenots lived in the Languedoc and Gaillard is a Huguenot name; they were often weavers…but who knows? It is a larger house than most of the others in the street. The house had a barn therefore the family would have kept a pig, rabbits and perhaps stored hay in the first floor of the barn. It fell in to disrepair at some point, the neighbours say it was a ruin. The house was bought in the 1990’s by a young Frenchman and his Breton wife, who partly restored it over time, single-handedly.

Lizzie bought the house in July 2004. It was necessary to update the plumbing and wiring, and to put in new windows and doors in some places. Hopefully, however, the character of the house has been maintained. The original ‘Provencal’ paint colours have been maintained inside and out. As a final twist, Lizzie’s mother’s maiden name was Gillard, and the family is believed to have been Hugenots, originating from France.

This website was built by Lizzie’s sister, Anne Jackson (www.clearheadcommunications.com ), who also visits the house, with her family, from Canada. She would be glad to make a website for you, if you need one.
